Library Aide

Job Summary:

The Library aide performs essential library services in the Tribal Education Division Library / Media Center.  Services include readers advisory services, generalized reference work,  circulation and tracks inventory. 

Essential Functions:

  • Provides information to patrons covering the broad spectrum of knowledge including, but not limited to: collections holdings, fiction and non-fiction recommendations based on patron needs, book review summaries, and other general desk coverage responsibilities.

  • Checks in all collection items returned to the library during shift hours.

  • Performs all check-out of collection items during shift hours.

  • Notifies patrons of return dates of items loaned.

  • Clarifies Tribal Library lending policies for patrons as necessary.

  • Prepares, organizes and maintains the collection holdings.

  • Enters inventory of Library holdings into a database.

  • Prepares collection items for cataloging.

  • Utilizes professional library tools.

  • Operates by national library rules and regulations to catalog and classify materials and standard documents and for restocking shelves.

  • Assists with annual collection inventory documenting & reporting.

  • Maintains a tracking system that identifies Library users and prepares a monthly usage report.

  • Facilitates and/or presents library programs to public and Tribal community.

  • Prepares and/or presents information on general resources or specific area/services to Library visitors.

  • Plans and conducts tours and orientations of the Library/Media Center and resources availability.

  • Facilitates guest presentations to specific groups and audiences as needed.

  • Collaborates with the Tribal Education Division Programs and Tribal Education Committee to define, plan and implement new programs to address membership needs.

  • Serves as a liaison with other educational organizations seeking library service.

  • Serves as a liaison with other local and regional libraries to enhance resource availability.

  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED. An Associate's Degree is preferred in a related field.

  • One (1) year of directly related work experience is preferred.

  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Must have ability to perform general library duties and set and maintain appropriate standards for service delivery.

  • Knowledge of National library rules and regulations in order to catalog and classify materials and standard documents preferred.

  • Must have the ability to work with diverse groups.

  • Must have the ability to conduct presentations which reflect positively on the Tribal organization.

  • Must have excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

  • Must have the ability to conduct problem resolution.

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.

  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.

  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.

  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.

  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.

  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.

  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during Emergencies, or when the Tribal Emergency Operations Center is opened.

  • Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
