Summary

Safely manage operation and crews of drilling rig from start to finish including moving the rig, rig up and rig down, maintenance, and day to day drilling operations.

Essential Functions

  • Supervision, Leadership, and Communication – Supervise and train rig crew.  Direct rig crews performing such activities as tripping pipe, drilling, and maintaining good hole conditions.  Confer with service and supply company personnel in order to gather information to drill wells successfully.  Provide information to supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates.
  • Perform General Physical Activities – Perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and moving the entire body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. 
  • Safely operate company vehicles. 
  • Nipple up blow out preventers. 
  • Thread cables through pulleys in derricks and connect hydraulic lines, using hand tools. 
  • Maintain all rig equipment as necessary to ensure efficient operation
  • Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings – Monitor drilling practices and recommend procedures that minimize risk and maximize efficiency.  Organize rig crews and maintain equipment to ensure safe, efficient and continuous performance. 
  • Make Decisions and Solve Problems – Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Safety Training and Implementation – Perform duties according to approved processes while being responsible for the well-being of every crew member.  Actively promote and implement all company and operator safety program procedures to create a culture of safety on the rig.  Ensure that all employees wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  Complete job specific required safety training and responsible for the training of other employees.

Knowledge

  • Mechanical – Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Safety – Knowledge of applicable safety regulations, policies and procedures.
  • English Language – Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words.

Skills

  • Equipment Maintenance and Repair – Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.  Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
  • Operation Monitoring and Control – Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.  Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Troubleshooting – Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Instruction – Teaching others how to properly complete a task or process.
  • Critical Thinking – Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Education

Prefer High School Diploma or GED.

Work Experience

Requires some previous work-related skill, knowledge or experience.  Prefer experience leading crews.
